Microsoft Unveils JPEG Alternative

Microsoft recently released a technical spec for a new format called WMP, which supposedly will be an image format that’s half the size of JPEG with the same or better quality. While it will probably take several years to unfold and become a standard, this could be a major advance as it will make photo sharing easier and allow for more rich and robust images in web pages and e-mails without increasing page load time. This format will be natively supported in the new Windows Vista operating system, but it will also be available as an add-on for Windows XP.

Since it seems that the format will be freely licensed, it will most likely also be available on Mac eventually.
